ABSTRACT
Success of a new food product on the
market is strongly related to how good that product is
adapted to consumers’ preferences, wishes, expectations
and needs. This paper shows the importance of consumer
studies including consumer sensory tests for product
prototype optimization on the case of an innovative
sweet topping made from well-known Slovenian wine Teran.
Empirical study was made combining two stages, first the
exploratory qualitative research with focus groups and
questionnaire and second a test for new food prototype
with consumer sensory techniques. The results of the
exploratory research were very encouraging and perceived
market potential was substantial. However, when more
precise and objective research techniques were applied,
obtained managerial recommendation critically differ.
Application of the consumer sensory tests, namely
preference test and JAR (just about right) test,
disconfirmed high expectations from the exploratory
phase and showed that chocolate flavour is the main
driver of liking the topping.

adapted muscovy duck (Cairina

ABSTRACT
Sexual size dimorphism (SSD) is a
common phenomenon in most mammalian and poultry species.
This study was undertaken to investigate SSD in
nondescript locally adapted Muscovy ducks in Nigeria by
applying descriptive analysis, sexual dimorphism index
(SDI), sexual size dimorphism index (SSDI) and Principal
Component analysis to morphological variables. Besides,
attempt was made to identify best morphological
predictors of sex using Stepwise Discriminant analysis.
Data on ten morphological traits; body weight, body
girth, body length, wing length, shank length, shank
circumference, thigh length, total leg length, bill
length and bill width were taken from 1,020 extensively
managed adult Muscovy ducks comprising 287 males and 733
females. These birds were randomly sampled from Rain
Forest, Derived Savanna and Guinea Savanna
agro-ecological zones of Nigeria. Sex significantly
(P < 0.001) affected all morphometric measurements in
favour of males. Assessment of relative contribution of
morphological traits to SSD through SDI and SSDI
revealed that body weight followed by skeletal
frame-related variables (body length and wing length)
were the most dimorphic traits. Three Principal
Components were generated for each sex; accounting for
62.70 % and 54.24 % of the total variance explained of
male and female ducks, respectively. In tandem with the
SDI and SSDI results, Stepwise Discriminant analysis
indicated body weight as the best predictor of sex of
adult Muscovy ducks followed by wing length and body
length; correctly classifying 98.5 % of ducks and are
reliable for sex determination in the field. The
established SSD in this study could be employed for
description, utilization, selection and planning of
improvement programs of male and female Muscovy ducks.

ABSTRACT
Synthetic nematicides such as oxamyl
and carbofuran play significant roles in the management
of plant-parasitic nematodes. However, their negative
environmental impacts have it imperative to search for
safer alternatives. As part of our contribution in the
search for bio-nematicides, compounds from plant extract
were screened for possible potent nematicidal agent. A
new isochromane carboxylic acid glycoside, isolated from
the leaves of Kigelia pinnata (Lam.) Benth
(Bignoniaceae) was evaluated for its nematicidal
activity. The structure of the proposed compound was
characterized by various spectroscopic methods, which
included UV, FTIR, 1D-, and 2D-NMR, FAB-MS, TOF-ESI-MS
and TOF-ESI-MS/MS (TANDEM). The in vitro
experiment conducted on the glycoside against
Meloidogyne incognita juveniles and eggs indicated
an induced mortality. Its activity can be compared
favourably with oxamyl, when tested at 0.1 mg/mL
concentration. At four hours of observation, no
significant difference (P < 0.05) between oxamyl and the
glycoside was observed. The present data sustains that
natural glycoside is a promising oxamyl alternate for
controlling nematode-induced plant root knots and may
contribute to integrated pest management.

ABSTRACT
The analysis of horse personality is
an important topic in horse breeding. Knowledge of
personality enables proper training for a horse, which
leads to a better animal welfare. Horse personality can
be graded according to four methods: 1)
questionnaire-based personality assessment method, 2)
personality assessment based on heart rate, 3) and
behavioural tests and 4) method of grading the
personality by viewing constitutional characteristics.
Most widely used is the questionnaire-based method and
the method with behavioural tests. The methods with
heart rate and constitutional characteristics are
showing some potential but more work needs to be done to
ensure reliability and to improve results
interpretation. This paper presents a short review of
the mentioned methods and provides preliminary results
of a pilot study where we used the method of grading the
personality by focusing on constitutional
characteristics of animals´ heads. The method was tested
on three Lipizzaner horses. Features of the head of the
horses were explained by following the recommendations
of Tellington Jones in Taylor (2009). The obtained
results were compared to personality grades, provided by
horse coaches in a questionnaire. Results matched the
questionnaire grades in gelding 77 % while in the mares
80 % and 47 %. Horse personality assessment focusing on
constitutional characteristics of horses has a great
potential as a reliable method, but more work is needed
to be acceptable for a practical use.

ABSTRACT
The aim of the study was to find out
conditions and characteristics of Slovenian farms that
are engaged in egg production as well as their future
strategic plans. The results were obtained with
questionnaires that were sent to 87 farmers but 50 were
properly answered and returned. Besides egg production
most farmers are engaged in other agricultural and
non-agricultural activities. The main objective of
farmers is sufficient income and production of quality
and safety animal products. The differences among groups
of farmers are presented according to system of egg
production (organic / other systems), model of
production (specialization / various agricultural and
non-agricultural activities) and expected egg production
in future (enlarged production / unchanged production).
